Talking Is Teaching
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) recently signed on to become the first state-wide implementer of "Talking Is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing," a research-based public awareness and action campaign designed to impact parents in the critical role they play in their child's early brain and language development.
The Kalamazoo County Great Start Collaborative is excited to implement this campaign and affect positive changes across Kalamazoo County. Talking Is Teaching is unique in early literacy programs in that it emphasizes three critical components. The campaign will:
Train trusted messengers such as pediatricians, home visitors, child care providers, faith leaders, librarians, social service providers and others who have established positive trusting relationships with parents.
Provide high quality materials and tools to families, early childhood professionals and the community at large.
Showcase public messages in community spaces such as grocery stores, laundromats, playgrounds and WIC offices.
With Talking is Teaching, every person from grocery store clerks to bank tellers, from daycare providers to grandparents will have the knowledge of how to positively affect the brain development of our littlest ones.
